What Are Your Digital Fabric-Printing Options?

Creating beautifully printed textiles isn’t as complex as you may think. There are several techniques for adding print on fabrics; the technique you choose will depend on the type of fabric you’re working with and how it responds to various kinds of ink.

There isn’t a fabric printing method that’s better than the rest; each comes with its benefits and drawbacks.
If you’re launching a fabric printing business or are looking for one to help you print on fabric, here are some of the options you need to look into:

Dye Sublimation Printing

When you need to print on polyester, dye sublimation is the way to go! The process involves using either a sublimation transfer paper or a direct-to-fabric printer.
Using transfer paper is more common but printing directly on fabric produces better results. The dye-sub printing process uses disperse dyes. Graphics are first printed on a sublimation transfer paper and then exposed to heat, which converts the solid transfer paper into a gas. The heat bonds the ink to the fabric to create a high-resolution image.

Direct-to-Fabric Printing

On fabrics like nylon, cotton and silk, you can print directly on the material using direct-to-fabric printers. Sublimation transfer paper techniques can only be used on polyester fabrics; for all other material, you’ll have to print directly on the fabric.

A roll of garment goes through a large printer and various kinds of dyes are placed onto the fabric to create a print. Acid dyes are used for silk and nylon. Disperse dyes are used for polyester and textile pigments are used for natural fibers such as cotton.
Direct-to-fabric printing techniques are most commonly used for flag and soft-signage, home décor, fashion brands, and sports apparel. For flags and soft-signage, it’s best to go for deep ink penetration.
Whenever you want to print on fabric, make sure to consider your needs before deciding on a printing technique. For smaller items, you can purchase a dye sublimation printer and disperse dyes and print graphics on fabrics yourself.
For printing on larger fabrics, you will need to partner with a garment manufacturer.
